Savings, investing and retirement accounts for expats

Welcome to the Netherlands! Life in another country always comes with challenges, from getting your official papers sorted to dealing with baffling local customs. And while opening a bank account shouldn’t prove too difficult here, what about saving, investing and taking care of your pension? That’s where we come in.

Who is Brand New Day?

Brand New Day is an online bank founded in the Netherlands. We have been around since 2010 and manage over € 8 billion in assets for our clients.

You can’t open a checking account with us or take out a loan. We focus on one aspect of the banking business: helping people grow a financial buffer for the future. You can open a retirement account with us (which can come with significant tax benefits), and/or a regular savings or investment account. The latter doesn’t have tax benefits. But, unlike a pension account, it allows you to take out your money at any time.

Once you reach retirement age, you can also choose to take out an annuity payment with us (but don’t do this unless you plan to stay in the Netherlands permanently).

Should you open an account with us? Maybe not!

Our banking services are open to anyone (except U.S. persons and a few other exceptions) who lives and pays income tax in the European Economic Area, has a checking account at a Dutch bank, as well as a Dutch mobile phone number and last but not least: a BSN. If you don’t fit that description, we’re afraid we can’t take you on as a client.

You should also be aware that – other than this page and whenever you contact our friendly customer service – all our communication is in Dutch. If you anticipate that being a problem for you, we are probably not a good fit.

In certain cases we can’t accept clients from countries within the European Economic Area. Please contact us for more information.

Still with us?

Great! We will be happy to set you up with a top-notch savings, investment and/or retirement account.

Investment account

At Brand New Day, your money will be invested in index funds. That means it is invested in thousands of stocks and bonds simultaneously, across industries, nations and even continents. You don’t need to try to outsmart the market, something that only some clever (or lucky) people manage to do sometimes. You do need to choose which of our risk distributions fits your profile: from very defensive to very offensive. We are convinced that this strategy best sets up our clients for long-term positive returns.

Savings account

After years of low savings interests, rates have gone up significantly since the summer of 2022. Saving is a great way to put money aside for emergencies and other unexpected expenses. You don’t run the risk that comes with investing, and you can withdraw your money at no cost at any time. Open a term deposit (for 1 to 10 years) on your account and earn an even higher, fixed interest rate compared to the standard variable interest rate.

Investment retirement account

However long your stay in the Netherlands is going to be, you don’t want to neglect your retirement fund. Especially when this country has some great tax benefits for those who put a little something aside for their retirement. Make a deposit before the end of the year, and depending on your personal situation you could be on the receiving end of a significant tax refund in the following year.

Savings retirement account

Your money will steadily draw interest. You qualify for the same tax benefits as investment retirement account holders. Whenever you make a deposit in one year, you could be getting a nice tax refund the following year depending on your personal situation.

Relocating

Are you planning to relocate? When you move abroad, this usually won’t affect your Brand New Day account(s). However, it is of course important to be aware of any tax implications that may result from your relocation. These are the two options if you relocate abroad while holding a Brand New Day account:

Are you relocating within the EEA?
You can keep your accounts under the condition that you also keep your Dutch IBAN and citizen service number (BSN). In some cases however it is unfortunately not possible to keep your accounts even when relocating within the EEA. Please contact us for more information.

Are you relocating to a country on this list?
We will unfortunately have to close your retirement account. If you’re relocating for a year or longer, this also applies to regular investment and savings accounts. Closing any account has several fiscal and financial implications, which vary from case to case. Please contact our customer service desk for more information.
